Radiant Energy Is It As Harmful As It Sounds?
Radiant energy is something that has always been mistaken for being harmful, for generally people think that it refers to energy produced from radiation. Radiation in that definition is somehow correct, but it’s not in the same sense. Radiant energy here is the one in electromagnetic waves, which we use daily for so many purposes in life.
It is a common term in radiometry, solar energy, heating and lighting, and not to forget telecommunications sometimes. Radiant energy is contained in the waves that are used to transfer them around.
For example, solar energy is the largest source of radiant energy, and the amount of energy is enormous, which is multi directional, without a specific direction. Sometimes radiant energy refers to the electromagnetic wave itself, especially when it involves transferring power from one point to another.
Scientific Part Of It
Radiant energy is calculated by integrating radiant flux with respect to time. And of course, since it is energy, the unit is in joule. Electromagnetic radiation is scientifically believed to be stream of photons, and radiant energy here can be viewed as the energy carried by these photons.
What We Can See
When the waves are being accepted by the object that they were directed to, the radiant energy in the waves would be converted to heat normally. This can be seen in the case of solar energy again, but this time just concerning the sun light.
The sun light, which is an electromagnetic wave, carries all the radiant energy, and when they touch the face of the earth, the energy would be converted to another form of energy without losing anything and that is heat energy.
The same goes to places with infrared radiation. If you were to stay a few minutes in a room full of infrared electromagnetic waves traveling around, you will see that the room temperature will constantly rise, because the waves are being absorbed by everything and converted to heat.
But what happens to the remaining waves? Well I guess, as we have seen in our Science textbooks, they are either reflected to scattered around, which means the energy in it is also redirected or redistributed. This is where the exposure to radiation comes in.
The best part about radiant energy is that this energy source can be used to power up anything possible, and it doesn’t run out, especially if it’s coming from the sun. A system which is powered by the radiant energy from the sun would be something related to solar energy production, such as solar cells, solar energy collector, or our very own earth’s atmosphere.
