Electricity Provided Naturally Through Geothermal Energy
For years, as humans, we have used up a lot of the Earth’s natural resources for our own purposes. Most of these purposes have to do with travel, such as when oil is made into gasoline for use in cars or passenger jets. However, what happens when all of that oil and other natural resources are all depleted? What should we do then? Many scientists believe that we can harness geothermal energy and that it can provide us with a cheaper, longer lasting energy source so that we no longer have to use the Earth’s precious oil and such.
How Is Geothermal Energy Harnessed?
Geothermal energy, also called renewable energy, can be harnessed in one of several ways but the most common is from dry steam plants. Dry steam plants take geothermal energy, the Earth’s natural heating element under the Earth’s crust, and convert it into electricity for human use. Now, imagine being able to power your home or office by the natural heat of the Earth. It’s renewable, which means we can’t deplete it like coal or oil, and it’s longer lasting. So, why haven’t all cities and states adopted geothermal energy as their main energy source? Well, unfortunately, we are still too dependent on oil and gas, however, many places do in fact use geothermal energy plants and soon, hopefully, more cites and states will catch on.
Geothermal energy, it should be noted, is not the only type of renewable energy. For instance, water, wind and the sun can also be harnessed and turned into electricity, much like geothermal energy. We are still a ways off from utilizing them all to their full benefits and until then, we are forced to use oil and the Earth’s other resources until we come up with better technology in order to implement the above examples into cost-effective energy sources.
However, you can make a difference. Write your congressperson or state representative and tell them that you believe that we should be using renewable energy sources, such as geothermal energy, energy that is longer lasting, cheaper and is provided naturally by the earth. It’s just heat that’s being used for electricity, or steam as the case may be. By writing many letters and writing often, your voice will probably be heard. You can get others involved, also, to make your position more known.
Geothermal energy is the future and together we can all make a difference to make this world a better place, and that includes using renewable energy in place of oil and other resources.
